Why Megan RidesWe all have a reason for daring to cycle from coast to coast; mine is two-fold: to honor the past and to protect the future. First and foremost, I ride in memory of my grandmother, Mary Jane Cole, who died from lung cancer in 1996. Second, I ride so that effective therapies may be developed for the projected 33% of my future patients who will be diagnosed with some form of cancer. I ride to prevent their family and friends from having to see them through the final stages of cancer, as my father had to do for his mother. I ride in hopes that research funded by Team Believe will allow children, grandchildren, mothers, fathers, and friends to build memorable relationships with their loved ones without the fear of cancer stealing them away at a moment’s notice. I ride because I will one day be a member of the medical community and I never want to have the responsibility of delivering bad news without the ability to offer some relief. I ride because medicine cannot heal without proven treatments – because treatments cannot be tested without research – because research cannot go forward without funding. I ride because I believe. |
