Why Clare Rides

In the last several years it has seemed that more and more people that I know have been diagnosed with cancer - a great aunt, a great uncle, my mom's cousin, the son of my grandfather's new wife, as well as several family friends. Some of these people have survived the battle. Some continue to fight the battle every day. Some of them have died. They leave behind family and friends who miss them very much.

When some of my team mates and I first discussed taking a bicycle trip across the country, I was excited at the thought of having a big adventure before settling down to focus on graduate school. Then Sarah shared the news that her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I knew that her dad had died of cancer. I was very concerned for my friend and her mom, but mostly I felt helpless. When the suggestion was made that the transamerican bicycle trip be used to raise money for cancer research, I was very excited to be "doing" something to help.

I absolutely believe that one day there will be cures for all kinds of cancers. These cures will not be accomplished without research, and research takes money. I will be riding with Team Believe this summer in order to raise money for cancer research. As importantly, I will be riding across the country this summer in honor of those individuals who have fought and continue to fight cancer everyday of their lives.
