Press Release

On June 1, 2007, six college students will set out on a 2-month long bicycle ride across the United States to raise money for cancer research. The student-run, not for profit organization will begin their nearly 4,500 mile cycling tour, “Believe in the Cure”, in Astoria, Oregon and conclude in Yorktown, Virginia. When Team Believe is asked what makes them consider undertaking such a seemingly impossible task, they reply with one simple answer: We believe in ourselves, we believe in our cause, and we believe in the cure.

Team Believe intends to complete their trip via a self-supported system, which means that the members will carry all necessities on their bicycles without a lead vehicle on which to depend. Doing so provides the team an opportunity to symbolically represent the journey towards the cure – while the road may seem long, it is far from impossible. One must only believe.

Team Believe is partnered with the American Cancer Society, and all proceeds generated by Team Believe via the “Believe in the Cure Tour” will benefit the ACS. The team hopes that their ride will inspire donations from individuals of all walks of life, in addition to those of corporate sponsors. Team Believe has set their overall fundraising goal at $100,000. Team members admit that this goal is hefty, but they hold to the belief that it is attainable if everyone gives even a little.

In Team Believe’s fundraising system, donations can be made in memory of a loved one who has been lost to cancer, in honor and support of a friend or family member who is battling the disease, or in recognition of a survivor. Team Believe welcomes such personal accounts of loss, faith, and hope. Email messages can be submitted along with monetary contributions to the addresses below (Miles of Memory and Hope). These messages will be carried cross- country by Team Believe and read for motivation. Following the “Believe in the Cure Tour” all messages will be returned along with a personal note of gratitude from the team.

Corporations and individuals who are interested in supporting cancer research through “Believe in the Cure” should visit the team’s website www.believeinthecure.com or contact Team Believe’s co-directors: Sarah Breevoort (sara2745@uga.edu) or Nathan Crain (ncrain@uga.edu)
